Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV) is a Chilean shipping company that is currently the largest in Latin America and one of the oldest shipping companies in the world, having been founded in 1872. CSAV operates a fleet of approximately 110 container vessels and provides services to five continents, uniting Latin America with the world’s most important ports conveniently and efficiently.

Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT) Solution

CSAV has recently initiated a fuel saving program for their container services and part of that project has been to provide their fleet with AWT’s on-board weather and voyage optimization software BonVoyage System (BVS) along with shore assisted weather routing. Once a vessel is at sea the biggest two variables that will impact the fuel consumption for a voyage is what route the vessel sails and the speed used.

Business Results

By adopting AWT’s services CSAV has been able to more closely manage the fuel consumption of their fleet and reduce their overall fuel consumption while still maintaining their schedules. On a recent voyage from Korea to Mexico the Captain intended to sail south of Japan but AWT recommended via Tsugaru Kaikyo. The Captain sailed via AWT’s route and saved 24 hours of sailing time and 75MT of fuel which saved CSAV nearly $50,000.
